Dredge Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot...

O'Harlan's Smeltery, tomorrow midnight.

We shall discuss your daughter's future.

Come alone.

Cordially,
Dredge Izzvanus

Antipode Arjen quakes as he reads the note Nyte handed him. "I don't care what he says, you're not going alone! You know what he did to Crystal, and Hope, and... NO," he shakes his head again. "We'll take some officers from the guild, ones we know we can trust, keep it low-key. But there's no way you're leaving tomorrow on your own."
NyteShade She very calmly tucks a lock of black hair behind her ear.

"It says come alone, that's what I intend to do. There's no telling what he might do to Hope if I don't. He doesn't want me, he already has her."

She smiles at him pertly.

"this is the safest course of Action, Arjen."

Antipode He growls slightly and his eyes widen. "NO! I won't let you go alone! Don't you remember what happened last time you did that? The Hand? I still had to show up and drag your battered body home!"

He forces himself to calm down and breathe before speaking again. "At least let me tail you. Let me know you're all right, just for my own peace of mind."

NyteShade "As I recall I had to drag your battered body home first. Which caused me to have to go in alone anyway... and it wasn't cause I was hurt, it was because I was bloody exhausted!"

She pokes her index finger into his chest aggresively.

"This IS what I'm going to do. You're NOT going to get involved. If he wanted you or any of your assorted cohorts along he would have invited you."

Fireball The flash and bang of a Chaos Control manifests Fireball between the two.

"There you are! Been looking all over!" He looks a little sheepish. "I heard about Charity... er.. I mean, Hope. Sorry I wasn't there. Most of my contacts at the police are... well, they died in the Fallout. But I've got something you should know...." finally sensing the tone.".... er.... am I interrupting?"

NyteShade "what have I told you about appearing in my house out of the blue?!

She scowls darkly at him. She's still furious at him for the damage he did to her house.

"You weren't inturrupting, we'd finished our discussion. Hadn't we, dear?"

Fireball Fireball gives Nyte a "get over yourself" type look. Hopefully she'd pick up on it, even though his new foxy face isn't the one that she knows well enough to read.

"What, what are you-" He snatches the note off of her and reads it.

"'Dear Gullible, Please walk into my trap, Signed, The Bad Guy.' You're not really going alone, are you?"

NyteShade She gives him the most, blank, dull look that he's possibly ever gotten from her.

"Of course I plan to go alone. He's got my daughter, who'd currently just as soon gut all of you as look at you. You don't understand, half Arjen's "police force" would totally get destroyed by Hope if she set her mind to it, let alone this guy. He'll mangle you all just like sheep to slaughter."

Fireball Fireball rolls his eyes. But of course, no one can tell.

"Screw the police, they've always been hopeless in this city. But at least let me come with you. I can watch from a distance, and I may have only one tenth my speed but I have something that I can match this guy with."

Fireball outstretches his hand and reveals the red, green and blue Chaos Emeralds. "Auh?" He smiles broadly. "And you know what else? There's three more IN THIS CITY! He's probably got them himself."

NyteShade She shakes her head no, somewhat sadly.

"While I appreciate your bravery Fire, I can't let you do this. the note says alone, I don't want to jepordize Hope's safety. If this guy wants a one on one meeting with me, he's going to get it."

Fireball Fireball pouts. What she's saying makes sense.

"All right, but you could, like, wear a wire or a hidden camera or something?... Or easier still you could, like, telepathy message us if something is wrong. You can still do that, right? We'll be close by." He tosses an arm around Antipode's shoulders, for the sake of irony.

NyteShade

She nods distractedly looking over Fireball's shoulder at the grandfather clock in the hall. She intends to ditch him at the earliest convenience. In fact it comes as quite a surprise to both Arjen And fireball when the time to leave comes, she's already gone on ahead without them.

Nyte looks wonderingly up at the smeltery, the smoke stacks spewing out bright blue fiery smoke that glitters of into the dark cloudy sky. A smattering of rain forces her to squint as it blows into her face. She gives the entrance a quick visual once over, and seeing no one, she proceeds inside the building, popping the door's lock off with an almost casual use of her shadowmancy. She steps into the darkened inner working of the mechanized building and her ears flatten against her black hair as she wanders deepering into the factory, pushing sweat dampened bangs from her face.

Antipode Podey is there. Seriously, was there any chance he wouldn't be? Not even the denial of his wife could keep him from trying to protect her at all costs. He had let the word slip to those higher-members of the SCPD that he trusted absolutely, and a handful who accepted the call were tailing him to the factory district.

The atmosphere was solemn in the group as Antipode led the way down the dark deserted commercial street. There was no movement, save for the slow blinking on and off of the Tower lights shining high above them.

"This is for Hope..." he reminded them again. "We need to get her back. I won't let him have her."

They stop about a block away from the location he had memorized as the rendezvous point. "This is the place, but nobody moves until I give the signal. This guy's not going to come quietly, and he's not someone to screw with. Got it?"

NyteShade Since it seems to her that this Dredge character isn't coming out into the open without some kind of invitation, she gives him one.

"I'm HERE! I've come for my daughter! Alone, as you requested."

Short. To the point. She wasn't here to mince words.

Dredge He allows his presence to be felt, on the rooftop of a gun shop two blocks down the street from where they are gathered. His formless cloak flaps in the night air as he looks down at them, gesturing - beckoning - her toward him.
NyteShade She follows him with narrowed eyes. This wasn't going according to plan at all. He wasn't supposed to change the meeting place, but what choice did she have? she had to follow. It was the only way to get Hope.
Dredge He disappears inside the building as she gets closer. One can only assume he went inside to "wait" for her.
NyteShade She goes inside against her better judgment calling out angrily.

"Stop running and face me. I thought we were going to talk, not play tag!"

Dredge At the moment she steps foot in the store, a tremendous explosion of air rushes past her, blowing out the glass panes on the doors and windows and throwing shards all over the street.

A psuedo-flash of dark light alerts her to his presence on the far side of the shop, crouching in the shadows and coiled like a spring, ready to pounce at a moments' notice, his cloak billowing in a nonexistant breeze.

"And here I am."

Dredge grins menacingly.

NyteShade Nyte looks up at him, face blank.

"I've come as you directed. Alone, unarmed. Now, where is my daughter?"

Nyte looks around the shop expectantly. She really had no hope of defeating this monster, but she used this time to see if the immidiate area would give her any type of advantage over him, should she actually need it, while at the same time looking for Hope.

Dredge "Far from alone... Is that your entourage outside, then?"

He doesn't supress a chuckle.

"It seems you've broken the agreement. What shall I do with you now? More importantly, what shall I do with her?"

NyteShade "I've come for my daughter. Give her back, you've no right to do what you did to her!"

Nyte points at Dredge accusingly.

"I came alone, I can't help if I was followed by Arjen."

Fireball Fireball had had to move vantage points. He hadn't been counting on Dredge moving her to another location, he should have thought of it though!

He had leapt onto another rooftop and now had a view of the building itself, he could see Nyte, but not the other guy. He had had to stop himself pouncing in when he saw the glass explode. Nyte would be furious if he had charged in prematurely. But he wasn't going to let her down like he had at the bank robbery.

He glanced over at Antipode and the troops, further down the street and scowled darkly.

Hey didn't always play well with other and non-superpowered were likely to get in the way.

Dredge "Did to her? I healed her from her bed rest. She chose to follow me."

He takes a step from the shadowed corner.

"Your daughter believes in what I'm trying to accomplish here, which makes her a completely rational and high-thinking individual, to my mind. She is acting completely on her own, and if you want her 'back', I suggest you discuss it with her. But if you want to make a situation of it here and now, you're more than welcome to try and prove your case."

NyteShade "Are you kidding me? Apex was never sane, rational, or highthinking! It's hard to believe you didn't take her by force considering you threw her cousin out a window! And yes, I'm more than willing to press the issue. I'll fight you if I have to, I might not win, but I'll at least soften you up for my husband."

She frowns then adops a pleading posture.

"Why won't see reason, you're like those people that have to have it beaten into them. You could have hurt her in any number of ways with this...this INSANITY that you call a mission. Not to mention that stunt at the bank, you expect me to bleeive that you aren't a liar a cheat and a thief?"

Dredge He shakes his head slowly.

"I can only hope you and the rest of your imbecile city will recognize what I'm trying to do, in time. Nothing I ever do will harm your precious daughter, I can assure you - and you know as such, so you must think me an idiot if you're bringing it up."

He smiles a little, a little devilishly.

"If you stay out of my way, I can guarantee the safety of you and your family. Though I know you'll have no part of that."

NyteShade She shakes her head in the negative.

"I could care less what you did, I'm not one of those hero type people off to save the world. I think a little chaos is the spice of life, but you've got my daughter, I can't just let that slide or whatever you want to do. Yes I know that nothing her could harm her, but their are powers that could get involved that could, and I can't let that happen."

Dredge He sighs, getting bored.

"Well, I don't much care what you can and can not accept. She's not here anyway, so it's not like I can just give her to you. What are you going to do, beat her location out of me?"

He laughs in her face.

NyteShade She blinks slowly.

"I do hope it won't come to something as droll as all that. Is that what you want, to instigate a battle with me? I'm nothing as strong as Hope, but I think I'm enough to handle you if I have to, maybe not finish you, but handle you. What would fighting me accomplish?"

Fireball Fireball looked down at goings-on below. If he had a sniper rifle, he could probably pick off Nyte from here. Of course, that'd be pointless. It would be more useful if he could hit this Izzvanus guy.

He manifested his three Chaos Emeralds in his hand. There was only a couple of things he could do with them, it'd be more useful if he had them all. They were glowing slightly, there was more Emeralds nearby.

"Tenner says 'bad guy' has them," he said to himself.

NyteShade Nyte knows Fireball is there. She can sense him, his ire at the situation. In the back of her mind she hopes he won't do something rash like charging in on this madman in front of her, but at the same time knowing he'll probably do just that, come streaking through the broken window frame and just plow into Dredge and pummel him. After all, part of her wants to do just that...just hit him. Hard. In the face. Repeatedly, for taking her child. The audacity of the man's actions slinks to the forfront of her mind's eye and she can't stop or contain the silvery tattoo that creeps into existance on her right cheek, flashing a quick marroon before settling into a bloody read color as if someone has run claws over that side of her face. Her hackles raise and its all she can do not to growl at Dredge.

"If I murdered you in cold blood. I think I'd be well within my rights."

She sags, hands held in blood-drawingly tightened fists. She knows its well within her power, to kill this beast, just let go of everything in a hellish conflaguration of power the likes the city hadn't seen in a while. Raze the area to the ground just to kill him.

"Arjen would have me spare you. I know. Just to save the innocents nearby that don't deserve to suffer because of you."

Dredge "Your weakness is your undoing, NyteShade Darkbane. I have nothing more to say to you."

He turns from her and faces to the back alley exit door. He stops a moment and looks back at her over his shoulder.

"It is no wonder to me why your daughter made the decision she did. She will be a wise and powerful woman."

His eyes gleam.

NyteShade "My name is Nyteshade Evangel!"

She says, lunging at him quickly, fast enough to grab another person. She aims at his throat intent on choking the very life out of him. He wouldn't see reason, she'd have to beat it into him, it seemed violence was the only thing he understood.

Fireball ~And there it is!~

He watches NyteShade run and leap. Action! He runs to the edge of the building, a telephone wire runs between here and a building the next block over on the other side of the street. He tries to ride it with his Light Speed Boots but its cold, the line is not in use.

~Oh well, have to do this the old fashioned way.~

He takes a few steps back, runs, jumps, lands on the wire, and balances, grinding his way along by the curve in his shoes. He surfs to the opposite building where he springs off, runs down the side of the building, plummeting towards earth, and right before he hits the ground leaps forward and rolls, providing a faultless landing and plenty speed as he smashes through the back door of the building Nyte and Dredge occupy.

Dredge Dredge sidesteps Nyte's attack faster than the woman can blink, lashing out with a kidney punch that racks her body with pain. He stands idly by while she recovers, his eyes betraying neither sympathy or anger.

"And so it comes to this. Apex was right about you."

Fireball Fireball tosses his legs forward, crouches and bounces backwards into the wall, bounces again shooting off the wall and flies through the air. He outstretches his body and aims his shoulder to connect with Dredge's face. After that blast he lands and immediatly flips backwards, spinning in the air and crashing into Dredge in a ball, his bushy fox tail extending out of the otherwise-completely spherical ball.
NyteShade Nyte yelps, doubling up over dredge's fist before he pulls away, she falls to her knees without his support and with a low growl climbs back to her feet to face him. About that time Fireball barges into the room. Her screech of fury is hard on the nerves as she shrieks a quick "this is my fight" at him before going back after dredge with a flashing axe kick.
Dredge Dredge casts his hands in a wide arc, and all the guns on the shelves around them spring to life, obviously pointing straight at her. They fire, a deadly network of bullets criss-crossing the room. Hardly a danger, he would have her believe, so she wouldn't pay any mind when a couple glance off her shoulder. But then the damage is done.

The woman staggers and drops to the floor, not understanding what's happening to her, why she would suddenly feel so weak. A terrible chill spread through her skin, radiating from the flesh wound in her shoulder.

He pulls another bullet out of his cloak and tosses it to the floor, where it bounces with a ping and rolls to in front of her, where she can get a good look at it. It gleams in the low light of the store - it isn't the bullet itself, but rather what it's made of.

NyteShade Displaying a presence of mind that her pain racked conciousness shouldn't have she snatches up the bullet in one hand, obscuring it from Fireball's eyesight, before cradling her wounded shoulder with the other. She stares up at Dredge with eyes wide with surprise.

"How? How did you know?"

She rocks back and forth on her knees with a low moan, showing the first real pain she's show for quite a while, at least to anyone outside her family.

Dredge He kneels down and slowly - menacingly - wraps his fingers around her throat, lifting her bodily and suspending her with a surprising display of strength.

"There is a saying I believe you are familiar with."

A deep bass pulse sounds in the back of her and Fireball's brain, his hand seeming to vibrate with a sudden charge of energies.

"And you should consider yourself lucky, Nyteshade Evangel. Not many get the change to recieve what I am about to bestow on you - what some may call a 'gift'."

The color suddenly drains from her face, as all of her mortal and immortal energy is drawn out through his grip.

"You are truly going to experience what it's like to be unborn."

One by one, memories and experiences are stripped from her mind...

NyteShade She writhes in his grip with a piercing wail of agony as her world is suddenly pain. In fact her scream doesn't stop so much as it goes soundless and she inhales in a gut-renching gasp and clutches fruitlessly at his hand. As her energy is drained away and her body begins to, for lack of a better term, regress in age, her inky black fur and hair changes also: the hair turning a bright bloody red that starts out as a barely there blush on the roots before rippling sepently down the length of her tresses. Her fur also lightens in spots till its covered in silvery hollow cicles and dots, like that of a leopard.

She gives one more gasp before her eyes slide shut, sleepily and she goes limp in his grip, drained. Her heartbeat stumbles, the pulse in her throat, against his hand weakening considerably, almost falling into nonexistance.

Fireball "LET HER GO YOU SON OF A B****!"

Fireball, disorientated from the pulse in his head, gets back to his feet with a fresh set of anger. He sprints and tosses himself and Dredge's legs, forcing him to fall to his knees with the momentum of the lunge, then flips back into the air, spinning around and rapidly inflicting a a kick to the head.

Dredge Fireball runs into a body, but it's not Dredge. After an unceremonious toss he breaks NyteShade's limp fall to the ground. His lip sneers.

"Take her, your precious princess. I am finished with her."

He calmly moves to the front door while the hedgehog works to untangle himself, stepping out onto the street and walking from the scene.

Fireball Fireball sprints after him, at an unparallelable speed, but as he approaches the outside world, Dredge has, of course, disappeared.

He slams back in, the door swinging wildly, as he drops to his knees at NyteShade's body, he lifts her head and shoulder's so she's sitting up.

"Oh god, what's he done to you? Can you hear me? Where the hell is the bloody 'Pode and his army?"

NyteShade Her head lolls bonelessly on her neck, falling against his supporting arm. She seems to be unconscious, but her body is icy to the touch, as if he's just pulled her from a frozen river. Her breath rattles awkwardly in her chest, coming out in agonized gasp, but most concerning is the gunshot wound in her shoulder, which is bleeding rather profusely. She stirs from his constant shaking, blinking owlishly up at him, before clutching at her shoulder.

"Ngh, it hurts..."

She manages to say, in the most shocking, piping soprano voice. The voice of a young girl at most 13 or 14 years of age. she promply passes back out though, from the pain and bloodloss and fireball is left holding the unconscious child-woman with no explaination.

Antipode "Okay, that's it! Everyone move in, now!" Antipode shouts, pointing at the building. He had been away from the group on the next rooftop over, keeping a mind's eye on the goings-on down below. He had been holding off as long as possible, but when "Dredge" had his wife around the throat he couldn't take it anymore.

He jumps down to the ground and rushes for the door, trusting his team to follow. He bursts into the room to see Nyte unconscious, and he can't decide whether to be concerned or outraged. "What happened?!"

Fireball "TOOK YOUR BLOODY TIME!" Fireball yelled, losing his cool in the heat of the moment. He raises his head to yell at Antipode but doesn't take his eyes off her. He puts his hand over her bleeding shoulder and applies some pressure. "Think he's sucked out her powers or something. He shot her with Kryptonite too. Her heart is barely beating, dude, you got a medikit or something?" He's panicking.
Ryan Ryan sprinted to the building, crashing to a halt against Antipode's back. He stepped away, apologizing with a wave of his hand and slipped inside. He was confused, to say the least, as Nyte is 1) hurt and 2) a child.

"That guy did this?"

Antipode "Some bodyguard you turned out to be," he snips at the fox as he kneels down beside this strange new Shade to assess her injuries, but winces and turns away. "He... did something to her, I can't see what's going on. I can't even heal her shoulder."

He scoops her up in his arms and hurries back out to the street. "We have to get her Saint Artemis'."

Ryan Ryan holds the door open as he speaks out. "Then let Fireball take her while we track that other guy. The bad guy's too fast for him to chase, but you can teleport. Then, if we need Fireball, you can contact him telepathically and all's good."
Fireball "I went demolition on that guy!" Fireball exclaims, exasperated. "It didn't even slow him down." He follows Antipode and Ryan out into the street.

"I reckon I can carry her there in about 20 minutes, or I could hunt this guy down. It's your call." He looks at Arjen expectantly, then knocks away a rifle that one of the SCPD men carelessl had pointed in his direction.

Antipode "I'll take care of this. It's my fault, anyway..." he scowls. "Go after him if you want, I have to take care of Nyte."

He almost thinks about folding space to get to the hospital, but then decides against it - if Shade's newly-transformed body can't take his healing energy or mental attentions, he wouldn't want to risk having her body tear itself apart by teleporting. He sets off on foot.

(( ->> Arjen's thread continued in [chaos crisis] Aftermath))

Fireball Fireball watches Antipode walk off. He turns authoratativley to one of the policeman. "Don't just stand there you idiot, call him an ambulance!"

Fireball's eyes narrow as he thinks of Dredge. His attacks seemed to go right through him. Dredge had barely registered Fireball's existence. He turns to Ryan.

"Newbie, get up on the roof and see if you can see any sign of where 'Bad Guy' might've gone, I'm gonna search the area."

Addressing the SCPD. "Anyone see which way he went?"

Ryan Newbie?!

Ryan follows orders not without a scowl directed at the fox. He's not sure how Fireball gets off on shouting demands, especially since he's not even an SCPD officer.

Besides, Ryan was going to check the roof anyway. And just to flex some muscle and prove to Fireball that he has a little more authority, Ryan tells all units to spread out. "Report anything suspicious. Particularly a shadow-ed hedgehog with crazy red eyes, forget the ambulence, Pops will take care of it."

He throws a wry smirk in Fireball's direction and scales the latter of the closest building, hopping up the roof. He seems calm despite the situation. If this happened about a year ago, Ryan would have been the one freaking out, and Fireball would have been calm.

Ryan closes his eyes and focuses on the inky blackness behind his lids. Then he opens them, and the world warps into swirling spirally images. He sees Fireball as a mass of bright energy in somewhat of a bodily form. All around him, less bright are the SCPD officers taking their position.

The world itelf is bright with chaotic energy. Dredge's energy should appear much brighter if he's anywhere near considering the strength he's shown so far.

He silently thanks his mom for this new ability.

Fireball The bronze blur tries to be everywhere at once. Using his light shoes he is able to dash down alleyways and back and forth across streets, in the vague direction indicated by the baffled police, by collecting series of floating golden rings at near-light speed.

In the industrial district your choices are large, well-lit roads, designed for trucks and lorries to drive through easily, or any of countless large, shadow-filled buildings with a myriad of hiding spaces.

It was becoming rather obvious that Dredge wasn't sticking to the roads. If he wasn't hiding, he had at least two Chaos Emeralds, he could have used the Chaos Control.

Fireball turned around, his search of the immediate area had given him nothing, and headed back the way he came to join Ryan on the roof, keeping his eyes peeled for any sign all the way.

Ryan Ryan shakes his head and his vision clears. He throws a quick apology at Fireball. "I'm new at this, sorry."

He closes his right eye again, focusing entirely on his left. He sees the energy trails that Fireball has left behind and he sees everything else just as before in this surreal light, but he can't seem to find Dredge.

"Do you know if he can use 'Chaos Control?'"

Fireball Fireball has his arms folded. He shrugs and makes a face to try to show the apology was unnecessary.

"I wouldn't be surprised. According to the 'Pode he's a Chaos-user and I'm pretty sure he's holding a couple of the Emeralds."

Fireball watches Ryan squinting like he's failing an eye test. "When did you get Second Sight?" He asks, matter-of-factly.

Ryan He mumbles distractedly, "'Bout a week ago. Nyte gave it to me."

His right shoots open, then, and he points at an area down below. "There! He used Chaos Control right here."

Fireball A rant about abuse of power and the natural order bubbles up inside of Fireball but dies instantly when he hears that Ryan has found something.

Excitedly, "What? Where? Can you see where he controlled to?" Fireball moves to Ryan's side and looks in the direction he is looking.

Ryan "Well, I can but I won't be able to move fast enough if I were to trail it on my own."

He hops down from the building and runs into the spot where he estimated that he saw the chaos energy used (he's using normal vision now). "Here! Now while I'm using Second Sight, you carry me. I'll tell you were to go, but you gotta be listening." He closes his right eye again, and soon he shouts excitedly once more. "It goes that way! West I think!"

Fireball "Carry you? Oh, for gods sake." Fireball leaps off the edge of the building, gripping it with one hand, then drops. He catches hold of a windowsill halfway down to break his fall, the drops again. He curls up into a ball just as he hits the ground and bounces, with only his bushy tail sticking out. Then when he returns to the ground he winds himself up, preparing to spindash.

"You'd better be right about this!" Fireball releases and begins rolling towards Ryan. As he reaches him he stands up under Ryan's legs, lifting him up onto his shoulders as he dashes in the direction the young hedgehog was pointing.

Ryan Ryan suddenly elevates, which caught him off guard, but soon, he's laughing as Fireball speeds up and the wind pulls his face back. It's been forever since he's traveled at this speed, and he has forgotten how it felt.

Upon being lifted to Fireball's shoulders, Ryan lost concentration on the trail, so after having a moment to enjoy the speed, the hedgehog concentrates again, and surreal world re-shapes again and more easily this time.

"It's going in between buildings with a lot of stairs-cases and fire-escapes. Get ready!"

Fireball Fireball struggled. Already he was out of breath. He was drawing as much energy as he could from his stored up rings and the Chaos Emeralds, and still he was already out of breath. He forced himself onwards. He was defiant to admitting that his speed was nowhere near as great in this body as it had been before the "accident", and Ryan may have been small but he was not made of paper.

"Was-"puff"-born ready!"

Ryan Ryan made a face, confused that Fireball was out of breath.

Oh well.

Like a masterfull acrobat (with a few slips, but well recovered), Fireball navigated the jungle of steel and brick magnificently. As they emerged from the tangle, Ryan pointed out that the track was about to curve, but also said that they need to keep to the roofs.

Fireball Fireball pushed threough the pain barrier and continued. Ryan was actually lighter than he looked, and Fireball ducked, leapt and dodged through the staircases, window ledges, air conditioners and balconies that made up the urban terrain with practised ease until he emerged on a red coloured rooftop and paused to catch his breath.

"Where-"breath "-now?" Wheeze.

Dredge

The sorry pair eventually reach the very edge of the city, where the trail abruptly goes cold. With no further leads they are forced to turn back, the search fruitless.

Those of a willing heart may witness the further deterioration of the city, and the breakdown of its moral fiber, as dissention takes hold.
